The Role
We are looking for a Obesity Specialist Nurse with an independent prescribing qualification to support patients as part of our digital-first healthcare service. In this role, you will conduct consultations, assess patient histories, prescribe medications from our limited formulary, and provide ongoing support to ensure safe and effective treatment.
As part of our multidisciplinary team (MDT), you will play a key role in reviewing patient progress, addressing clinical concerns, and ensuring high-quality care. Your responsibilities will include:
- Conducting remote consultations via asynchronous messaging, video, and telephone.
- Reviewing patient histories, including Summary Care Records, biometric data, self-reported information, and current medications.
- Prescribing medications in line with service treatment plans and national guidelines.
- Providing advice and support to help patients manage their medication safely and effectively.
- Monitoring patient progress through regular check-ins and planned follow-ups.
- Escalating any clinical risks or concerns to the Lead Prescriber or Clinical Lead.
- Collaborating with the wider MDT, including pharmacists, GPs, consultants, dietitians, and health coaches.
- Auditing prescribing practices, including work completed by external prescribers using our pharmacy services.
- Contributing to service development and the refinement of treatment plans.
- Attending weekly MDT meetings to support collaborative decision-making.
- Participating in training with the Clinical Lead and other prescribers to continue developing clinical competencies.
About You
This role requires strong clinical judgement, excellent communication skills, and a patient-focused approach. You should be comfortable working in a digital healthcare setting and managing consultations remotely.
We are looking for someone who:
- Has up-to-date clinical knowledge, particularly in relation to the conditions we treat and the medications we prescribe.
- Is confident in prescribing and adheres to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Prescribing Competency Framework and General Medical Council’s Good Practice in Prescribing and Managing Medicines and Devices.
- Can assess when remote care is appropriate and recognise potential safeguarding concerns.
- Is proficient in handling referrals, interpreting medical reports, and managing information from GPs and other healthcare professionals.
- Can work effectively using cloud-based systems and digital tools (full training provided).
- Is able to manage their own schedule to ensure safe, effective, and timely service delivery.
- Enjoys learning and developing—both clinically through CPD and operationally by contributing to service improvements.
- Is comfortable working in a remote-first environment, communicating via email, chat, video calls, and telephone.
- Works well within a team and is committed to supporting colleagues in their development.

About the Service
This is a non-consultant-led Tier 3 Specialist Weight Management Service. The MDT includes dietitians, psychologists, doctors, and nurse independent prescribers, working together to provide holistic, evidence-based care. The majority of patients will engage with digital interventions, with approximately 80% expected to be prescribed GLP-1 RA medication.
Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
✅ Essential:
- Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
- Independent Prescribing Qualification
- Minimum 2 years’ experience as a Nurse Independent Prescriber
- At least 1 year’s experience working in a weight management or diabetes service
- Enhanced DBS check
- Level 3 Safeguarding certification
- Indemnity insurance (your work for the service will be covered under our organisation’s policy)
✅ Desirable:
- 2+ years’ experience in primary or secondary care
- 2+ years’ experience working in remote healthcare services
- Experience working within an MDT (multi-disciplinary team)
- Additional qualifications in obesity care, such as SCOPE certificatio
Time Commitment
- Candidates must be able to start from the 1st April 2025
- The role is estimated to require 1–2 days per week, including MDT attendance. As the service expands, there may be opportunities to increase hours, so we’re looking for someone open to a growing commitment over the coming months.
