As a member of the healthcare team, the Medical Assistant assists the Physician and/or Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in the technical nursing care given to patients. The Medical Assistant carries out functions that support patient care. Functions under the supervision of the Office Manager and the Physician and/or Physician Assistant or Advanced Practitioner.
General Dutes:
- Assessment and re-assessment of patients. Measure: Chart reviews and direct observation.
A. Completes the collection of demographic patient data. Verifies patient identity according to department policy before each exam. Introduces self and explains procedure/visit to the patient to encourage the patient’s cooperation and alleviate fears. Treats patients with courtesy, respect, and dignity.
B. Contributes to the collection of assessment data:
a. Takes and records patient’s vital signs
b. Notes Allergies in charts
c. Notifies provider of lab/test results for follow-up care
C. Observes patient and reports adverse reaction to medication or treatment by the Physician/Physician Assistant or Advance Nurse Practitioner. D. Aware of appropriate educational material for patients/families.
- Provide direct care to patients of all ages. Measure: Competency validation 100% and direct observation.
A. Carries out technical and therapeutic nursing interventions.
a. Assists with surgical procedures.
b. Draws blood and documents on appropriate forms.
c. Calls in prescriptions after approval by Physician/Physician Assistant or Advanced Nurse Practitioner.
B. Administers medications to patients using the five rights.
C. Demonstrates the use of standards, universal precautions as care is provided.
D. Assists with telephone calls/patient/family communication.
E. Completes referrals to specialists as directed by Physician/Physician Assistant, Advanced Nurse Practitioner and completes referral log.
F. Performs radiographs as ordered by Physician/Physician Assistant/Advanced Nurse Practitioner (if certified). Uses technical skills and knowledge to ensure proper positioning and technique, according to departmental protocol, in order to minimize repeat exams.
- Carries out tasks supportive to the patient care unit. Measure: Staff satisfaction with support service.
A. Uses free time to stock area supplies, clean work area and equipment.
B. Cleans equipment and sterilizes according to policy.
C. Prepares specimens for transport to lab.
D. Orders supplies.
E. Assist with other team members as needed.
F. Cleans and sterilizes patient rooms and counter tops, etc.
G. Assembles and uses medical equipment as needed.
H. Recognizes the confidentiality of patient information.
I. Communicates with other team members.
J. Maintains appropriate administrative logs in relation to sample medications, laboratory work, and radiology work.
K. Complies with CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA and other regulatory requirements as appropriate.
L. Reports equipment malfunctions, failure, and potential problems before end of day to avoid equipment downtime and/or potential hazards.
M. Assists physician(s) with hospital rounds, ER visits, etc. as requested by the attending physician.

Communication Skills: Effective oral and written communication. Expresses self in a clear, concise manner. Listens and follows directions. Documents accurately and thoroughly. Prepares concise and readable reports, memos, and notes.

Attendance & Punctuality: Maintains an acceptable level of attendance and/or punctuality. Consistently reports when scheduled. Returns from breaks promptly and on time. Works until the end of shift. Provides proper notice of reports off.
Education : A High School Diploma or General Education Diploma from an Educational Institution that is accredited and recognized by the U.S. Department of Education preferred.
Experience : Experience performing EKGs, vital signs, venipuncture, capillary and injection is preferred. One (1) year to three (3)+ years of Physician Medical office experience is preferred. Radiology certification is a plus.
Skills : EKGs, vital signs, venipuncture, capillary and injection.
Licenses/Certifications: Valid Basic Life Support - (BLS) certification is required.
