Shift: 1st shift (hours will vary based on department and organizational need)
Summary:
To manage the over-all operations of one or more of the technical departments of the Laboratory including Anatomic Pathology, Chemistry, Cytogenetics, Cytology, Diagnostic Immunology, Hematology, High Volume Lab, Microbiology, Special Chemistry and Transfusion Services.
Responsibilities:
1. Manages the daily operations of the department assuring consistent productivity through effective workflow processes.
2. Supervises testing ensuring validity and accuracy of test results, advises on same to determine if additional information is needed for clarification of test orders or results.
3. Provides timely and sensitive problem resolution to internal and external customers. Separates critical from non-essential data; seeks/considers alternative solutions. Responds promptly to client concerns and incident reports. Provides sufficient follow-up to ensure problem/issue is resolved and does not reoccur.
4. Serves as department a resource by sharing expert knowledge on technical issues such as unusual specimens, etc.
5. Understands and appropriately assesses how own decisions impact other departments.
6. Directs and documents the development and implementation of test protocols. Ensures that all tests are scientifically accurate and performed in accordance with standard protocol. Keeps abreast of new development/issues related to own area of expertise.
7. Is responsible for consulting with physicians and/or nursing personnel regarding laboratory findings, timing, and availability of test results or procedures.
8. Is responsible for answering and assisting with inquiries regarding interpretation of laboratory test results.
9. Utilizes the laboratory information system to ensure accurate data generation as well as appropriate data retention and retrieval.
10. Coordinates procedure manual reviews and revisions.
11. Establishes, maintains, and documents a preventative maintenance program to ensure equipment and instruments are in optimum working condition; recognizes malfunction and directs corrective action.
12. May assist in providing training as needed.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s degree.
2. ASCP Certification.
3. Minimum of five years’ experience in Transfusion Services.
4. Minimum of three years management experience in a clinical laboratory.
5. Demonstrated ability to train and motivate staff.
