Position Overview:
Are you passionate about advocating for housing rights and stability for LGBTQ+ individuals and families? Do you have a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by marginalized communities? In Our Own Voices, Inc. is seeking a dedicated and proactive LGBTQ+ Housing Navigator to provide comprehensive housing services and support to LGBTQ+ individuals and families experiencing housing instability or homelessness. In this role, you will be a vital advocate, ensuring clients have access to safe, stable, and affordable housing while navigating the complexities of the housing system. Key Responsibilities:
Conduct Comprehensive Housing Assessments: Meet with clients to assess their housing needs, eligibility for various programs, and potential barriers to securing stable housing. Develop tailored housing plans that address each client’s specific needs and goals.
Support Clients in Securing and Maintaining Housing: Assist clients in searching for and securing safe, affordable housing. This includes helping with applications, navigating rental processes, securing necessary furnishings, and providing ongoing support to maintain their housing.
Provide Crisis Intervention and Ongoing Support: Offer immediate crisis intervention and ongoing emotional support to clients experiencing housing instability or homelessness. Develop safety plans and coordinate with local shelters and emergency housing programs as needed.
Build Strong Relationships with Community Partners: Develop and maintain relationships with local landlords, housing providers, shelters, and community organizations to facilitate housing placements and create a network of safe, welcoming housing options for LGBTQ+ individuals.
Advocate for Clients' Rights and Fair Treatment: Serve as an advocate to ensure clients receive equitable treatment in the housing market. This includes negotiating with landlords, addressing discrimination, and advocating for clients’ rights under fair housing laws.
Connect Clients to Additional Support Services: Provide clients with referrals to wraparound services that support their overall well-being, such as employment services, healthcare, legal assistance, financial literacy programs, and mental health support.
Maintain Detailed Records and Documentation: Keep comprehensive and accurate records of all client interactions, housing plans, services provided, and progress made. Ensure all data is entered into relevant databases in a timely manner to support program reporting and compliance.
Engage in Community Outreach and Education: Participate in outreach efforts and educational activities to raise awareness about LGBTQ+ housing issues and resources. Represent In Our Own Voices at community events, meetings, and coalitions to build partnerships and advocate for systemic change.
Collaborate with the IOOV Team: Work closely with other team members and departments to coordinate comprehensive support for clients, share resources, and build a cohesive approach to advocacy and service delivery.
Qualifications:
Education: A Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Human Services, or a related field is preferred, but equivalent experience will also be considered. A Master’s Degree is a plus.
Experience: At least two years of experience working with LGBTQ+ individuals and communities, particularly those of color. Previous experience in housing advocacy, social services, or related fields is highly valued.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Understanding of housing resources, programs, fair housing laws, and tenant rights.
- Strong advocacy skills with the ability to navigate complex systems and advocate effectively on behalf of clients.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for client interaction, report writing, and community outreach.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
Teamwork and Independence: Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team to provide comprehensive support to clients.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced Education: A Master’s Degree in Social Work, Human Services, or a related field.
- Specialized Experience: Two or more years of experience specifically in housing advocacy or experience working with survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, or other trauma.
- Local Knowledge: Familiarity with local housing markets, resources, and community networks.

- Crisis Intervention and Conflict Resolution: Ability to effectively manage crises, mediate conflicts, and provide calm, supportive guidance.
- Interpersonal and Relationship-Building Skills: Strong ability to build trust and positive relationships with clients, landlords, community partners, and other stakeholders.
- Creative Problem-Solving: Capacity to think strategically and creatively to overcome barriers and find innovative solutions for clients.
- Data Collection and Reporting: Proficiency in tracking, managing, and reporting data to support program goals, outcomes, and compliance.
- Cultural Sensitivity: High sensitivity and understanding of the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals and families, particularly those of color.
