The Role
The Chief Medical Officer holds executive responsibility for managing the Providence Clinical Network support functions for Medical Staff responsibilities in the South Division. This full-time administrative position's principal responsibilities include providing leadership and facilitating the activities of Medical Staff Services, Medical Library, Quality & Case Management, Risk Management, Medical Records, and Medical Education. The individual will work closely with the Medical Staff Presidents and other senior leaders in carrying out their responsibilities. This role will advocate for the medical staff while serving as a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, helping to further build relationships between the organization and medical staff. This position does not replace or usurp the authority of the President of the Medical Staff, the Medical Staff department, or committees.
Essential Functions

Provide leadership direction for the Medical Staff and develop/implement a strategic plan to achieve the goals of the function.

Provide leadership direction and supervision of the Medical Staff Office(s) and other functional areas as assigned.

Provide staff support to the Chief Executive in carrying out their responsibilities. In addition, staff support will also be provided to department and committee chairpersons in carrying out their responsibilities.

Serve in an advisory and communication role to the Chief Executive on medical-administrative matters.

Provide leadership to the clinical quality enhancement function of the organization and assist appropriate departments and committees in maintaining and improving the quality of medical programs.

Facilitate communication and coordination of the various professional departments and their respective medical directors to improve patient care activities.

Be attentive to the needs and requests of the Medical Staff and facilitate the health system’s response to such.

Facilitate the cooperation and communication of the Medical Staff departments and the nursing division.

Constantly search for opportunities to improve clinical integration across the division and health system as a whole

Report to and receive formal authority from the Chief Executive.

Report monthly to the Medical Executive Committee on matters of interest to the Medical Staff and issues related to job responsibilities.

Serve as an Ex-officio non-voting member of the Medical Executive Committee, Quality Improvement, and Credentials committees and such other committees as appropriate.

Understand the strategic relationship with CHOC and strengthen the relationship between Providence St. Joseph Health and CHOC.
Qualifications

M.D.
-
Board eligibility training in a major specialty.

Upon hire: California Physician Osteopathic License (Vendor Managed), or California Physician and Surgeon A License (Vendor Managed), or California Physician and Surgeon C License (Vendor Managed), or California Physician and Surgeon G License (Vendor Managed)

Private practice experience.

Experience as a Chief Medical Officer/Vice President Medical Affairs or other administrative physician position. (Preferred)

Working knowledge of information systems essential to efficient operations and quality improvement.

Understanding of the dynamics of managed care and its effects on all stakeholders.

Able to develop and maintain strong, effective relationships with the medical staff, Board of Trustees, and management.

Able to motivate and assist medical staff leadership to ensure adherence to legal and regulatory requirements.
